Fantoft Stave Church – Arson Attack (1992)
On June 6, 1992, the Fantoft Stave Church, originally built around 1150 and relocated to Bergen in 1883, was deliberately set on fire. The blaze completely destroyed the wooden structure, including its intricate stave construction and centuries-old carvings. Investigations identified Varg Vikernes, a central figure in Norway’s early black metal scene, as the main perpetrator. The attack occurred within the broader context of a small network of extremists responsible for a wave of church burnings across Norway during the early 1990s. Firefighters responded quickly, but the church was entirely lost. Vikernes was later arrested and prosecuted for the murder of Øystein “Euronymous” Aarseth and multiple acts of church arson connected to the black metal church-burning wave. The church was subsequently reconstructed using traditional techniques, though many original medieval elements were permanently lost.
